This paper draws an outline of Giovanni Prodi's (1925--2010) scientific biography. The second part of the paper describes Prodi's contributions in the different main fields of his mathematical activity: fluid dynamics, nonlinear analysis, biomathematics, with some details about his own research results. Concerning his more general role in Italian culture, in the first (more strictly biographical) part we read about his presence in the debate on the relation between science and faith and his interest in the renewal of the Italian mathematical teaching.
