With a view to improving a few results of \textit{D. O'Regan} and \textit{R. Saadati} [Appl. Math. Comput. 195, No. 1, 86--93 (2008; Zbl 1135.54315)] and \textit{M. Imdad, J. Ali} and \textit{M. Tanveer} [Chaos Solitons Fractals 42, No. 5, 3121--3129 (2009; Zbl 1198.54076)], the authors obtain common fixed point theorems for occasionally weakly compatible maps in Menger spaces and derive corresponding results in metric spaces.
