A presentation of the philosophy of the history of mathematics of Jean Cavaillès (1903--1944), for whom ``There is nothing less historical [\dots] than the history of mathematics.'' The influence of his doctoral advisor, L. Brunschvicg, the nature of mathematics as ``enchaînement'', the failure of the foundational schools to provide an account for the nature of mathematics are treated in sufficient detail to provide a good introduction to Cavallès's thought. There is a complete Cavaillès bibliography, including two books on him, by H. Sinaceur and by P. Cassou-Noguès.
