Spectral gap actions and invariant states (Q2927900)

This paper concerns the relationship between spectral gap actions and standard actions of discrete groups on von Neumann algebras. The authors show that for an action of a discrete group on a von Neumann algebra, if it has a spectral gap action, then it is standard, and the converse does not hold in general. As two applications of the result, the authors give a characterization of the inner amenable finitely generated ICC groups and a characterization of the property (T) of a countable discrete group.
