The authors are interested in finding eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a linear Fredholm integral equation in two dimensions with a compact integral operator. Applying a Nyström method based on piecewise polynomials, approximations for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are obtained. An error analysis is provided, and based on this analysis, the authors extend the fundamental approximate solution method by means of a Richardson extrapolation.
