This book presents an introduction to continuum mechanics. The goals of this book are a basic understanding of the tensors and tensor calculus in Cartesian coordinate systems and in coordinate-free form; the stress as a tensor; the difference between material and spatial descriptions of motion; the measures of strain and deformation and the deformation rate for arbitrary deformation magnitudes; the formulation of equations describing the balance of mass, momentum, and energy in their various forms, and the introduction of constitutive behavior. The book is divided into five parts: Mathematical preliminaries; Stress; Motion and deformation; Balance of mass momentum and energy; and Ideal constitutive relations.NEWLINENEWLINEAfter reading this book, the student should know how to use index notations for vectors and tensors; to calculate components of tensors in different Cartesian coordinate systems; to use and manipulate the stress tensor and to explain the meaning of its components; to manipulate and describe the relations among different measures of strain and deformation; to derive and explain equations describing the balance of mass, momentum and energy; and to understand papers on advanced continuum mechanics.
