This article gives a biography of the Chinese mathematician Gu Chaohao (1926--2012), who was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980 and was awarded the State Top Science and Technology Award in 2009, one of the highest distinctions in China. Originally from Zhejiang Province, Gu studied at Zhejiang University and became a student of Su Buqing in 1946, who introduced him to the study of differential geometry. From 1957 to 1959 Gu stayed at Moscow State University and thereafter focused on the study of partial differential equations in accordance with the official demand for developing science in China. He became full professor at Fudan University in 1960. Not mentioned in the article is Gu's fate during the Cultural Revolution (1966--1976), except for a visit of the American physicist C. N. Yang in June 1974, which was the beginning of several research cooperation programs on the gauge field. His numerous achievements and publications are resumed in the second part of the article. These include Gu's work in the fields of differential geometry, partial differential equations and mathematical physics.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1291.00056].
