In a generalisation of the application of finite elements in the numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations, the approximation of first derivatives of multivariable functions by piecewise polynomials is analysed. To this end, the approximation error of gradients by at least continuous piecewise polynomials (by interpolation and otherwise) is studied and compared to local best approximations.
