The classification of \(k\)-involutions in algebraic groups was considered by \textit{A. G. Helminck} in [Adv. Math. 153, No. 1, 1--117 (2000; Zbl 0974.20033)]. \textit{A. G. Helminck} and \textit{L. Wu} classified \(k\)-involutions of \(\mathrm{SL}(2, k)\) in [Commun. Algebra 30, No. 1, 193--203 (2002; Zbl 1001.20044)]. The author addressed the same problem for exceptional algebraic groups of type \(G_2\) in [J. Algebra Appl. 13, No. 7, Article ID 1450039, 16 p. (2014; Zbl 1297.20047)] and of type \(F_4\) in [J. Lie Theory 25, No. 4, 1003--1022 (2015; Zbl 1342.20049)]. Here, the author gives a classification of \(k\)-involutions of groups of type \(E_6\) over fields of characteristic distinct from 2 and 3. Groups of type \(E_6\) can be realized as isometry groups of Albert algebras or as automorphism groups of Brown algebras. The author explores properties of Albert algebras, Brown algebras and of several other algebras and their relation to exceptional algebraic groups of type \(E_6\).
