The Turaev and Thurston norms (Q312758)

The authors relate the Thurston norm of a 3-manifold with empty or toroidal boundary to a variation of Turaev's norm for 2-complexes by establishing an inequality between them for the exterior \(N\) of a link in any rational homology 3-sphere (Theorem 1.1.), which equates if \(N\) is irreducible (Theorem 1.2.) -- a nice example of the self-replicating nature of homological algebra.
