The word ``models'' in the title of this quite interesting paper refers to actual physical (wood, metal, plaster) models of geometric surfaces. This may conjure up images of creations intended for classroom use and now ensconced in old mathematics department display cases. But Rowe relates the history of models that were developed for research purposes in the 1800s. Prominent mathematicians like Klein, Kummer, Plücker, and Clebsch designed such objects, supervised their construction, and presented them at scientific meetings.
