The author defines (regular) generalized difference operators, studies the generator property of difference operators and the stability of the generated semigroup, extends the results to generalized difference operators, presents a simple stability criterion for the generated semigroup which also gives an explicit estimate for the growth bound, and shows how the singular case can be reduced to the regular one. Three examples which illustrate the results are considered.
