The authors considers the Hamiltonian of a chain of harmonic oscillators coupled by springs of equal length, restricted to nearest-neighbor interactions only. It is shown that the thermodynamic properties of this chain is completely determined when the spectral distribution is known, and some properties of the determinantal equation which defines the normal modes are exhibited.
