By definition the characteristic of a simple group of Lie type is the characteristic of the field over which it is defined. In the present paper the authors prove: if \(G=\mathrm{Sp}(2n,q)\), \(q=2^k\) and if \(L\) is any simple group of Lie type with the same two largest element orders as \(G\), then \(L\) has characteristic 2.
