The author of the article considers an optimal control problem governed by a class of semilinear elliptic equations and obtains both existence and nonexistence results by using relaxed controls. To obtain the nonexistence result, the author first considers the relaxed optimal control problem corresponding to the initial problem called the classical optimal control problem. By virtue of proving that any optimal relaxed control is not a classical control, he shows that the classical optimal control problem admits no optimal control.
