The authors prove special decay properties of solutions to the initial value problem associated to the \(k\)-generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation. These properties are related to persistence properties of the solutions to this equation. As an application of their method, the authors obtain results concerning the decay behaviour of perturbations of the travelling wave solutions, as well as results for solutions corresponding to special data.
