In this paper the author develops an index theory for positive dynamical systems in the planar case. He presents a formula for the index sum of isolated zeros in the positive orthant of \(\mathbb R^2\). As an application, some sufficient conditions for the existence of zeros of Lotka-Volterra systems in the positive orthant of \(\mathbb R^2\) are given.
