The authors study three related topological spaces: nodec (every nowhere dense subset is closed), submaximal (every subset is an intersection of a closed and an open set), and \(I\) (every nowhere dense subset is closed) via embedding into suitable compactifications. No separation axioms are assumed (unless explicitly stated). Nice characterizations of a space \(X\) the Herrlich compactification of which is nodec, resp. submaximal, resp. \(I\), are given.
