The author reports on a visit to the small museum in Stockholm devoted to Nobel and the Nobel Prize. It was a surprise to find that their timeline of the life of the unmarried Alfred Nobel included details of his relationships with women. This raised some curiosity about the answers given to the often studied question repeated in the title, such as that Nobel was angry at the mathematician Mittag Leffler who had an affair with his wife. Though the author agrees that the most reasonable answer is that mathematics was not of sufficient interest to Nobel, speculation is made about why the more colorful legends involving women in his life grew up as answers, at least among mathematicians. A brief survey is made of ten book-length accounts of Nobel and the Nobel Prize.
