In this beautiful article, the author portrays the development of the Calabi conjecture (``For any \((1,1)\)-form \(R\) in the first Chern class of a compact Kähler manifold, there exists a unique Kähler metric whose Ricci form is equal to \(R\)'') from its birth during a talk at the ICM 1954 in Amsterdam to Shing-Tung Yau's proof in 1976, and also discusses subsequent research, e.g. on Calabi-Yau manifolds and the mirror conjecture.
