The authors prove that if \(\varphi\) is a harmonic map from a Riemann surface to a classical simply connected inner symmetric space, then there is a twistor lift of \(\varphi\) or \(-\varphi\) if and only if \(\varphi\) is nilconformal. Many other results are given, including explicit formulae for twistor lifts.
