The author extends a theorem of Silver and Williams and proves that the order of torsion subgroups of the first homology group of finite abelian coverings of a link has exponential growth assuming that the first nonzero Alexander polynomial of the link has positive logarithmic Mahler measure. More general results of this type were recently published by Thang Le [``Homology torsion growth and Mahler measure'', \url{arXiv:1010.4199}].
