It is proved that there are 4--manifolds with infinitely many distinct structures for which Einstein metrics do not exist. Moreover, these manifolds satisfy the strict Hitchin-Thorpe inequality or the strict Miyaoka-Yau-LeBrun inequality. The result holds for both spin and nonspin cases.
