The authors present an alternative approach for constructing an a posteriori error estimator for low-order nonconforming approximations of scalar second-order elliptic problems, based on the solution of local problems on stars. Moreover, without using the saturation assumption, they introduce the star-based a posteriori estimator and perform the analysis for the diffusion-reaction problem.
