This is a survey paper discussing the relationships between the classical Schwarz lemma (in its geometrical formulation) and different symmetrization principles in complex analysis introduced recently by V. Dubinin and other authors. For some results (including those obtained by V. Dubinin) new simplified proofs of classical nature are proposed.
