The author considers periodic subdivision schemes, as introduced by \textit{M. D. Buhmann} and \textit{C. A. Micchelli} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 69, No. 2, 428--448 (1994; Zbl 0802.65003)]. Two functional equations and a vector scaling function are associated to each scheme. Then the study of Hölder regularity of a periodic subdivision scheme is reduced to the analysis of the regularity of the vector scaling function.
