The authors prove the existence of a global weak solution to the inviscid quasi-geostrophic system in \(\mathbb R^3\). The result is an extension of a previous one proved in a simplified case by \textit{P. Constantin} et al. [Nonlinearity 7, No. 6, 1495--1553 (1994; Zbl 0809.35057)].
