A posteriori estimates for different numerical methods for diffusion problems with discontinuous coefficients on anisotropic meshes are studied. Based on the stretching ratios of the mesh elements, the authors improve a posteriori estimates developed by \textit{M. Vohralík} [ibid. 46, No. 3, 397--438 (2011; Zbl 1270.65064)], which are reliable and efficient on isotropic meshes but fail on anisotropic ones. The main contribution of the paper is the anisotropic character of the estimators such that one can apply them on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments are presented in 2D to confirm that these estimates are reliable and efficient on anisotropic meshes.
