The authors consider a singularly perturbed system of partial integro-differential equations arising in a viral infection evolution model. An asymptotic solution is constructed with a boundary function method (references are included); i.e., through the sum of a regular series and a boundary-layer series. The analytic result is compared with a numerical study. Furthermore, attention is given to the case when the initial data lies on the slow surface, in which case the boundary layer is minimized [\textit{N. V. Voropaeva} and \textit{V. A. Sobolev}, Геометрическая декомпозиция сингулярно возмущенных систем (Russian). Moskva: Fizmatlit (2009; Zbl 1214.70001)].
