Summary: We construct examples of residually finite groups with Kazhdan's property \((T)\) whose FC-radical is not virtually abelian. This answer a question of Popa and Vaes about possible fundamental groups of \(\mathrm{II}_1\) factors arising from Kazhdan groups.
