The author briefly recounts the evolution of his ideas in the 1970s and 1980s on the philosophy and logic of belief change, before and during the collaboration with \textit{C. Alchourrón} and \textit{D. Makinson} that led to the classic ``AGM'' paper [``On the logic of theory change: partial meet contraction and revision functions'', J. Symb. Log. 50, 510--530 (1985; Zbl 0578.03011)].
