The authors offer a new proof for the inequality concerning a continuous linear functional which annihilates all polynomials of degree at most \(k-1\) for some positive integer \(k\), due to \textit{I. Gavrea} and \textit{M. Ivan} [Applied Math. Letters 23, No. 4, 381--384 (2010; Zbl 1231.26017)]. Applications related to numerical integration and quadrature are given.
