The author obtains estimates of the growth of subvarieties in the algebra of upper triangular matrices over a field, and provides equivalent conditions for finding the corresponding exponents of the growth. It turns out that for varietes of associative algebras the growth cannot be intermediate between polynomial and exponential, in the case of ground fields of arbitrary characteristic different from 2.
