A new characterization of the pseudo-intersection number \(\mathfrak p\) is given. If \(\mathfrak p_G\) is the supremum of the cardinal numbers \(\kappa\) such that every nondiscrete Hausdorff group topology on a topologizable countable group \(G\) having character \(<\kappa\) has a nondiscrete metrizable refinement, then \(\mathfrak p = \mathfrak p_G\).
