The authors consider on a foliated Riemannian manifold with transverse spin structure a suitable, adapted Dirac operator, (basic Dirac operator), and for such an operator they obtain a lower bound for the square of the eigenvalues. Particular cases are also considered in some detail. It is stateed that this work is related to and suggested by a previous paper [\textit{O. Hijazi}, Commun. Math. Phys. 104, 151--162 (1986; Zbl 0593.58040)].
