The signature invariants of Tristram and Levine [\textit{A. G. Tristram}, Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 66, 251--264 (1969; Zbl 0191.54703)] and [\textit{J. Levine}, Comment. Math. Helv. 44, 229--244 (1969; Zbl 0176.22101)] are shown to be independent of Vassiliev invariants of bounded degree, Alexander polynomial, and primeness of the knot. Results are also obtained relating these invariants to unknotting numbers.
