Bei der Theorie des Austauschs von Schwingungs- und Translationsenergie läßt sich bei schwacher Wechselwirkung zwischen freiem Atom und Oszillator dieselbe Störungsrechnung anwenden wie im Falle einer starken Wechselwirkung und einer kleinen reduzierten Masse des Systems. Eine vereinfachte Methode dient zur Berechnung des Einflusses der \textit{van der Waals}-Kräfte.
