Wiedergabe der achten Josiah Willard Gibbs Lecture, gehalten vor der American Mathematical Society und der American Association for the Advancement of Science am 30. 12. 1930. Verf. war in den Jahren 1899-1902 an der Yale University ein Schüler von \textit{J. W. Gibbs} (11. 2. 1839-28. 4. 1903) und gibt hier aus der persönlichen Erinnerung eine eingehende Würdigung der Persönlichkeit von \textit{Gibbs}, seiner Wirksamkeit als Universitätslehrer und seiner Arbeitsweise.
