Verf. stellt fest, daß die Verteilungsfunktion des Fehlerquadrats \(\varSigma\) von Stichproben von der Größe \(n\) aus einer \textit{Gauß}schen Verteilung mit der Streuung \(\sigma\): \[ y =y_0\exp\left(-\frac12\frac{n\varSigma^2}{\sigma^2}\right)\varSigma^{a-2} \] zum ersten Male von \textit{Helmert} (Schlömilch Z. 20 (1875), 300-303; Astronomische Nachrichten 88 (1876), 113-132; F. d. M. 7, 113 (JFM 07.0113.*); 8, 114-115) abgeleitet worden ist. Für die \textit{Helmert}sche Methode, die außerordentlich elegant ist, wird eine kurze Darstellung gegeben.
