The solution of \textit{S. V. Babu} and the second author [An exact solution for the optical absorbance of thin films, Stud. Appl. Math. 77, 173-182 (1987)] of Berning's difference equation for the electromagnetic fields within optical thin films is shown to converge in the continuum limit to a solution (expressed as a converging series) of the limiting differential equation.
