The purpose of this research was to compare \textit{R. D. Mindlin} [J. Appl. Mech. 18, 31-38 (1951; Zbl 0044.401)] and \textit{M. Levinson} [Mech., Res. Commun. 7, 343-350 (1980; Zbl 0458.73035)] plate theories for the specific case of the axisymmetric vibrations of thick circular plates. What is shown in this paper is that the two theories are identical. They simply represent different approaches which lead to identical results.
