Quantization of an Abelian gauge field in the spatial axial gauge can be consistently carried out by using the method of stochastic mechanics [see e.g. \textit{E. Nelson}, Quantum fluctuations (1985; Zbl 0563.60001)]. The method used here differs from that for the temporal-like gauges. The singularity at \(k_ 3=0\) that is characteristic of the spatial axial gauge (with gauge condition \(A_ 3=0)\) is left undefined in this stochastic formulation. However, any acceptable prescription used to regularize this singularity, for example the Vienna (or Mandelstam- Leibrandt) prescription, applies in this case.
