The author points out that Frobenius was led to ``create'' non-Abelian group characters by attempting to understand some ``relations'' in \textit{L. Kronecker}'s paper ``Über die Irreduktibilität von Gleichungen'' [Monatsber. K. Preuß. Akad. Wiss. Berl. 1880, 155-162 (1880)] (see also \textit{Th. Hawkins}, Arch. Hist. Exact Sci. 7, 142-170 (1970; Zbl 0217.299); ibid. 12, 217-243 (1974; Zbl 0397.01005), who documented Frobenius' interest in algebraic number theory by the extensive correspondence between him and Dedekind). Frobenius' conjecture has now become Chebotarev's density theorem.
