On the basis of his own recent results [Commun. Math. Phys. 124, No. 2, 319--336 (1989; Zbl 0691.17015)] concerning the Kac-Moody algebra \(A_1^{(1)}\) the author introduces a Weyl group for the highest weight modules of the Virasoro algebra and the Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond superalgebras. Defining the notion of ``active'' elements of the Weyl group with respect to a (generalized) Verma module he is able to derive character formulas for irreducible highest weight representations in the classical form.
