The authors study certain infinite-dimensional Lie algebras which contain a semisimple Lie algebra as maximal finite-dimensional subalgebra. In particular, a class of algebras associated to any semisimple Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\) is discussed which, when \(\mathfrak g=\text{sl}_2\), reduces to the Virasoro algebra. Speculations on the application of these algebras to conformal field theory are presented.
