The book by one of the outstanding astrophysicists of the 20th century Jayant Narlikar represents a popular and at the same time a very complete and comprehensive introduction to most of important problems of astronomy, astrophysics, general relativity and cosmology in their historical retrospective as well with an almost complete actual status and perspectives for the future. Every chapter of the book contains good historical references, very simple explanations of the basic physical phenomena, the most important former and actual physical experiments and astronomical observations, which make from the book a very pleasant, competent and useful reading. The most of the key discoveries in astronomy, astrophysics, general relativity and cosmology during the 20th century are reviewed carefully and competent. The reviewer of the book is recommending them for a large popularization and translation. For the second edition see Zbl 1246.83014.
