Contunuum mechanics. Constitutive modeling of structural and biological materials. (English)

This textbook introduces continuum mechanics for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate students. First, the book presents classical generalities: Chapter 1 -- tensor notation; Chapter 2 -- kinematics; Chapter 3 -- stress; Chapter 4 -- thermodynamics and constitutive modelling. Then the author examines classical and more advanced specific applications: Chapter 5 -- ideal gas; Chapter 6 -- fluids; Chapter 7 -- elasticity; Chapter 8 -- mixtures; Chapter 9 -- internal variables. It is also noteworthy that Chapter 11 contains code examples for numerical simulation with Matlab which should be straightforwardly useful for engineering practice. The level of mathematics is reduced to a minimum, which makes the book accessible to a large audience of students. The main advantages of this book are that it is self-contained, clearly written, and embraces many directions of the field. Drawbacks are that it does not contain bibliographical references, and is therefore of little use for research and to curious students.
