This is a book on the transformation of surface tidal waves into internal baroclinic waves in the coastal area, or when the surface wave passes an underwater mountain. The dynamical effects considered in the book play an important role in geophysical hydrodynamics, and are characterized by strong nonlinearity. The book starts with a review of analytical and numerical methods used in the analysis of generation of internal waves from the tidal energy. The results are presented in detail, including the comparison with observational data. In particular, emphasis is made on the generation of solitary waves in the case of strong nonlinearity, as well as on the generation of turbulence in internal waves, which are especially interesting issues. The book is written at a level appropriate for specialists and graduate students in the fields of physical oceanography and fluid mechanics.
