A short proof of Wagner's version of Grushko's theorem is presented. It is related to a proof of Stallings, but neither 2-complexes nor Van Kampen's theorem are needed. The simplification is achieved by replacing the 1-skeleton of the CW-complex used in Stalling's proof by its universal cover.
