The activity of the famous Steklov Mathematical Institute of the AN SSSR extends now over a period of fifty years. The present article gives a historical survey of the most characteristic results in the metric theory of functions obtained by members of the Institute and their pupils, and other mathematicians which contributed to the further development of these results. The founder of the metric theory of functions in the SSSR was N. N. Luzin. His and the work of D. E. Men'šov, A. N. Kolmogorov and S. M. Nikol'skij influenced the investigations to come. Of great importance, in this sense, were also the books of P. S. Aleksandrov and A. N. Kolmogorov (Real functions). A. Zygmund und N. K. Bari (Trigonometric series), S. Kaczmarz-H. Steinhaus and G. Alexits (Orthogonal series), G. H. Hardy (Divergent series) and S. Saks (Theory of integral). The results are presented in five sections: 1. General problems; 2. Representation of functions by series, 3. Bases; 4. Convergence and summability of series; 5. Classes of functions, Fourier coefficients and special systems. There are 171 references.
